🧐 When Is the Millennium? (Part 1 of 4)

“I saw an angel coming down out of heaven … He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil, or Satan, and BOUND him for a thousand years. He threw him into the Abyss, and locked and sealed it over him, to keep him from deceiving the nations anymore until the thousand years were ended. After that, he must be set free for a short time.” Revelation 20:1-3

OK friends, I’m going to jump RIGHT into it today! So, let’s talk about the MILLENNIUM … that’s Jesus’ “millennial” reign on the earth in our opening passage from the book of Revelation. Well, when is it?

Nonetheless, there has been great debate about this topic throughout church history and many believe this “millennial reign” won’t begin until Jesus returns. This is commonly called “premillennialism” meaning the Jesus will return “pre” or “before” his millennial reign. HOWEVER, I want to make the case to you over the next four weeks that Revelation 20:1-3 is actually describing Jesus’ CURRENT REIGN over the nations in the Kingdom of God, and that this truth has MASSIVE implications on the church’s mission in the world RIGHT NOW while we patiently wait for his return at the end of history.

For today let’s compare these verses with Matthew 12:29, when Jesus (after being accused of doing miracles through Satan’s power) said, “How can anyone enter a strong man’s house and carry off his possessions unless he first BINDS the strong man? Then he can plunder his house.”

Jesus’ choice of words here is interesting because he actually uses the SAME Greek word John did. It’s “deo” meaning “to bind.” In other words, Jesus was able to cast out demons because he had “bound” the Prince of Demons. In this metaphor, the Devil’s house is the world, and Jesus (along with the church after him) has been sent out to take back the world for his Father through the Great Commission and Gospel proclamation.

This is, in fact, the exact process that has been working itself out for two thousand years and counting. Interestingly, Revelation says the Devil has specifically been bound from “deceiving the nations.” Therefore, you, like Jesus and his Apostles, can go out into the world and take it back from the Devil! Now let’s get to work together and see what God can do in your community for Christ!
