🧐 What Is Postmillennial Eschatology?

ā€œI saw thrones on which were seated those who had been given authority to judge … They came to life and reigned with Christ a thousand years.ā€ Revelation 20:4

Happy Lord’s Day friends! Lately I’ve been unpacking the end-times from a Biblical perspective and, specifically, the MILLENNIUM and the different views on it. Basically, the different millennial views have to do with WHEN Jesus returns in relation to this ā€œMillennial Kingdomā€ mentioned in our opening scripture.

Of course, ā€œmillenniumā€ means a thousand and so that’s why this ā€œreignā€ of Jesus mentioned in Revelation 20:4 is referred to as the Millennial Kingdom.ā€

PRE-millennialists, see Jesus returning BEFORE (pre) the millennium, with the church surviving as the world spirals more and more out of control.

POST-millennialists, on the other hand, see the millennium as a PRESENT reality, as Jesus reigns from heaven and is conquering the world through his church, the Holy Spirit and the power of the Gospel with Jesus returning AFTER (post) his millennial reign.

Nonetheless, as you can imagine, this small pre/post distinction leads to sometimes dramatically different worldviews. For a postmil believer, Jesus will return one day after a long period of earthly peace and prosperity. This view is rooted in a more OPTIMISTIC understanding of the power of the Gospel and God's plan for earth. For postmil believers, this view shapes our perspective on the PRESENT in a fundamentally different way, and gives us an incentive to be gospel warriors in the world RIGHT NOW.

And generally speaking, we tend to be more optimistic about the world's potential for improvement, focusing on the undeniable ways Christianity has impacted the world. Our role as we see it, is to be agents of change, to bring the kingdom of God into being. But what are your thoughts?

Do you think the Millennial Kingdom is a present or future reality?

Can you think of any Scriptures that support your argument?

How should the church engage the world today and to what end?
