The Lord answered Moses, “Go out in front of the people. Take with you some of the elders of Israel and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink.” So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel. Exodus 17:5-6
OH MY GOODNESS! There is something you NEED TO KNOW about many Biblical sites like the one described in these verses and I tell you all about it in my NEW VIDEO “Sinai at Risk” (at pastoraj.com) with my friends Logan Kiesewetter and Nathan Bibb! You heard me right: Many Biblical sites like Mount Sinai, the Elim oasis, Elijah’s cave and the split rock of Horeb are at risk because of a MEGACITY the Saudis are currently building that runs STRAIGHT THROUGH the area. Much of this I witnessed with my own eyes during my Middle East adventure as newly paved roads were visible leading all the way to Sinai and the split rock! What’s concerning about all of this is that these archaeological sites are traditionally UNTOUCHED by civilization and offer visitors a chance to step back in time three and a half thousand years to the events of the Exodus. This is distinctly different than visiting Jerusalem, for example, where massive commercialization has given way to something that looks completely different from the Israel of Jesus’ day. Unfortunately, developments like this in Saudi Arabia could change the nature of these places or ruin them altogether. Right now, no one knows what the Saudis have planned for these Biblical sites and whether or not they have a place in their new megacity Neom for God’s holy mountain. Only time will tell. While we wait to see what’s happening let’s pray that these and other treasures may be preserved for future generations in their natural splendor!
