āBut there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive HERESIES.ā 2 Peter 2:1
Ā
OK friends, today weāre going to talk about the āHā word š± ā¦ but it may not be the one youāre thinking of. No. The word I have in mind is one I personally donāt like to use often because of my commitment to Christian love which overlooks a multitude of offenses.
Ā
Yet, there it is and the topic of FALSE TEACHERS comes up over and over again throughout the Bible. Well, what makes a HERETIC?
Ā
The topic came up for me this week while I watching popular teacher ANDY STANLEYās latest controversial comments on the IRRELEVANCE of the Old Testament for modern Christians š¢Ā You can click the link š to watch my full review of his sermon ā¦.
Ā
Nonetheless, we HAVE to draw lines right?? Well, yes we do and thatās the point of Peterās instruction in our opening Scripture. He said this because heresies are DESTRUCTIVE. I personally would consider anything HERESY that goes against basic Christian concepts like those laid out in the Apostlesā and Nicene Creeds, Godās name and nature (as in the āTrinityā), Godās Word as inerrant and infallible AND Godās Gospel of salvation by FAITH in Jesus, just to keep things simple.
Ā
Well, what do you think and MORE importantly how should we respond to our brothers and sisters in Christ when they are walking in MAJOR doctrinal error?? Undeniably, it is our job to preach the TRUE Gospel, both as Christās church AND as individual believers so donāt always look to someone else when God may be looking to you as his difference-maker in your spiritual community!
Ā
Application:
What are three basic beliefs that would make you use the āHā word?
Ā
How and when should heretical teachings be confronted?
Ā
How could your pastor help you in that process?
